Academic faculty contracts are of two types: either fiscal year (12 months); or academic year (9 months) For historical reasons some faculty have contracts for 9.5 or 10 months, but contracts of these forms are no longer permitted.
Academic faculty on academic year contracts may earn outside income from grants and contracts at their normal salary rate for the period of 12-x months, where x months is the length of their academic year contract. These faculty receive full health benefits, but pension benefits correspond to their academic year salary ONLY. Academic faculty on academic year contracts also have the option of unrelated off-campus employment during the period outside their contract. These faculty earn sick leave, but not annual leave.
Academic faculty on fiscal year appointments have a 12-month salary. They are paid the state portion of their salary, together with any amount they earn via grants, contracts and summer teaching; this amount, together with the state portion of their salary, cannot exceed the 12-month salary. These faculty have 22 working days per year of annual leave. When not on annual leave they are expected to be working full time for the university. Faculty on fiscal year contracts receive full health benefits, and pension benefits corresponding to the amount they are actually paid during the 12-month period.
All academic faculty with tenure home in a CMNS unit have the following options, subject to provostial approval:
- Status quo.
- Academic year (9-month) appointment with annual salary equal to the State component of the present annual salary.
- Fiscal year (12-month) appointment with 75% of the 12 month salary paid from State funds, and equal to the State component of the present annual salary; up to the remaining 25% to be funded through grants, contracts, summer teaching.
Each year faculty will have the possibility of exercising any of these three options. To do so they must indicate their wish in writing to the chair/director prior to March 15, and the change will then be effective on July 1 of the same year.
For the effect on leave balances, see the section Accrued Leave Policy.
