Leave Without Pay
June 2002

« Back to Chairs Handbook

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to establish College policy with respect to leaves without pay (LWOP).

  1. All LWOPs must be approved by the Chair, Dean, and the Provost.
  2. When a Chair recommends an initial LWOP for a period of up to one year, I will approve that recommendation unless there are truly exceptional circumstances that make it impossible.  As in the past, the full salary will remain in the unit.
  3. For extensions of LWOP beyond one year, the Provost is very reluctant to approve and so I will look at these carefully.  However, where in the view of the Chair, taking into account the teaching, graduate student and contract responsibilities of the individual, there is still a very good reason to approve the leave, then I will be prepared to do that, although I can not be confident that the Provost will follow suit.
  4. In all cases of LWOPs that extend beyond one year, 50% of the state-funded salary for the period beyond the year will revert soft to my office.

Steve Halperin, Dean
