« Back to Chairs Handbook
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to establish College policy with respect to leaves without pay (LWOP).
- All LWOPs must be approved by the Chair, Dean, and the Provost.
- When a Chair recommends an initial LWOP for a period of up to one year, I will approve that recommendation unless there are truly exceptional circumstances that make it impossible. As in the past, the full salary will remain in the unit.
- For extensions of LWOP beyond one year, the Provost is very reluctant to approve and so I will look at these carefully. However, where in the view of the Chair, taking into account the teaching, graduate student and contract responsibilities of the individual, there is still a very good reason to approve the leave, then I will be prepared to do that, although I can not be confident that the Provost will follow suit.
- In all cases of LWOPs that extend beyond one year, 50% of the state-funded salary for the period beyond the year will revert soft to my office.
