Revised, June 2002 and June 2004
Faculty leaves (other than for health reasons) during the academic year can occur for one of three reasons: Sabbatical Leave, Leave Without Pay, Short-term excused absence. Each of these is described in turn below.
- Sabbatical Leave is earned as follows. For each twelve (12) semesters in residence, tenure/tenure-track faculty earn Sabbatical Leave. Sabbatical Leave semesters are not accrued—you must be in residence for 12 semesters after a Sabbatical Leave to earn a new Sabbatical Leave. Sabbatical Leave may be taken for a single semester at full pay, or for two semesters as half pay. More specific details are given in the memo of January 18, 1995 from (former Dean) Richard Herman. A copy of the form used to apply for Sabbatical Leave is also provided. Note that applications for Sabbatical Leave are due to the Unit Head six (6) months prior to the start of the semester in which the Sabbatical Leave is to occur. Faculty members are required to submit a report on their Sabbatical activities to their Unit Head within 6 months of their return.
- Leave Without Pay. The rules for Leave Without Pay are spelled out in the memo from Dean Halperin below. The corresponding form is also provided. There is no formal deadline for applying for a semester's Leave Without Pay, but timely applications will allow for the Department Chair and the Dean to consult on the suitability and feasibility of the request.
- Short-term absences. On occasion, faculty have professional commitments that require a short-term absence during a semester. The CMNS policy governing such absences is stated in the memo of September 23, 1992 from Richard Herman.
Caveat added, Summer 2000
Recent actions by the campus administration:
- We have observed the 6-month deadline being waived, provided there is a compelling reason for the sabbatical, the unit can cover the loss of teaching resources, and all the usual requirements are satisfied.
- Sabbaticals are NOT automatic. There must be a bona fide program proposed by the faculty member indicating the benefit to the research and educational profile of the candidate. The Provost will be scrutinizing applications for sabbatical more carefully. A relevant recent memo from Ellin Scholnick in the Provost's Office is provided.
An administrative change: Sabbatical applications should be forwarded to Chris Fuller, rather than Vicki Brewer in the Dean's Office.
Second Caveat added, Summer 2004
Yet another toughening of the criteria for awarding sabbatical leave was announced recently by Provost Destler. An email from him is provided.
